STILL making parts

These are the clay parts for the body of a butterfly book I am planning for workshops. I hope they work out, it's kind of hard to tell at this point. This clay piece will act as the spine of the book. The oval flat area is for a vintage face to be applied and a pluck of maraboa feather will be added for hair. They are 5" long as taken out of the molds. They will shrink up a little after drying and firing. I hope to fire within the week and have photos of the finished book to share.
Filling up the kiln always takes so much longer than I plan. You'd think I would have figured this out by now as I have been regularly firing this kiln for over 30 years now (wow, that sure dates me!). We bought it just after getting married. I always have to think about a conversation I had with a friend of mine after buying the kiln ... I quote her, " Ya know Ingrid, that's how you and I differ.... the first thing we bought after getting married was a microwave ... you buy a kiln".

That's funny about the microwave versus the kiln. We creative types aren't always known for being practical. But really...who is going to go to their grave wishing they'd done more housework, or regretting a decision to buy a kiln as opposed to a microwave. Really, now!

I hope you post a picture of the book model once you have one made. Sounds amazing!

Making more doll parts sounds more interesting than the spring cleaning I chose to do today!

Like your friend, even though I didn't get married, I bought a microwave. It's still about the only kitchen appliance I use for cooking/eating. Everything else is dedicated to making art.

I have to say, you made your kiln last a long time (far longer than my first microwave, although I probably paid as much for it as you did your kiln) and made a handsome name for yourself in the process.

Can't wait to see your Disintegration project results!
