Aprons

 Aprons

After ruining most everything I wear, I  have learned it's best to just
always wear an apron. I seem to be an exceptionally messy worker.

Throughout the years I have modified and repaired dozens of aprons
and never really thought to photograph them.

Fortunately, I was able to dig up a few photos to use as reference as it's time to make/ purchase a few new ones.  I like to have several as a couple are always in the laundry basket awaiting laundry day.

Most of my aprons have ended up being more patchwork than the original apron.  They develop such personality over time and I love them all the more, however, they do get to a point they can no longer be repaired and I need to start over.

I was discussing this with a group during a workshop and we have decide to do this as a workshop together.  We will add embroidered patches, brooches and awards to them over time.  So, I have ordered a bunch of plain black (with pockets, of course!) 100% cotton aprons for us to use as the basic background.  I'm really looking forward to this group project.  Should be a lot of fun!

A Fun Little Project

This is my usual apron I use at home.  It's my favorite - it's the perfect size, has a few pockets and is just an all around great functional apron.  But, as I have used it quite a bit and I have scrubbed it clean several times, it now has a hole in it and a rather worn middle.  I'm usually okay with that sort of thing, but I am going to ArtUnraveled in a few days and it looks a bit plain and drab. I, of course, have far too many aprons, more than I care to admit to, but as I said, this is my favorite.

So, I pulled out my scrap denim bits, thick white thread and some buttons and got to work. I added a pocket flap with buttons so I don't lose things, added circles and stitched around them.  This is quite similar to another apron I embellished here.

Another Diversion

Over the years I have accumulated a ridiculous amount of aprons.  I'm not really sure why I have kept them all.  While going through them, deciding which to keep, which to donate and which to throw out, I came across this denim one.  I really liked the pockets and shortened the length by about 10 inches and decided it was a keeper.

Being a rather plain apron I decided to embellish it a little with scraps from a couple of pairs of jeans I shortened for my daughter, a blouse I just couldn't part with (because I loved the fabric so much) and the embroidered emblem from a Renaissance Festival sweatshirt. I really loved doing the repetitive circular stitching pattern. This is my favorite apron now ... I really want to make and embellish another one.
